Time for a Fresh Start: 5 Ways to Get Healthy

I don’t know about you, but with just the beginnings of warm weather and longer days starting, I’m already itching for change!

Spring is the easiest time of year to implement change so it’s the perfect time to begin new healthy habits, try new foods, get active, lose weight or achieve whatever your health goal is.

 

Here are 5 easy ways you can make your way health. Start slow, and try one new thing each week to make sure they stick.

1.  Start your day with Lemon Waterlemonwater

First thing when you wake up, fill a tall glass with room temperature water and squeeze in a nice big wedge of lemon juice. Not only is it a nice refreshing way to start your day – lemon water helps break your fast gently, get digestive juices flowing, helps detoxification, balances pH, and that’s just skimming the surface!

2.  Go Green

With your diet that is. Chlorophyll is what give plants their green colour and plays a crucialGreen veggie Heart role in photosynthesis. It is actually extremely similar to the structure of human blood so it is very effective for improving iron levels and detoxifying the body. It also balances pH and acts as a natural bronchiodilator so it can help with asthma.  Most of us don’t eat enough chlorophyll rich foods each day – foods such as dark leafy greens (kale, collards, spinach), broccoli, snap & sugar peas, cucumber, zucchini, sprouts, spirulina, and chlorella are all chlorophyll powerhouses! Try adding a big handful of dark leafy greens to your next smoothie, or juice. Have a big salad and load up on the veggies. Or go as simple as adding liquid Chlorophyll to your water (I love the Land Art Mint chlorophyll – it makes for a nice refresher)!

3.  Fermented foods

Fermented foods are foods that have been through a process of lactofermentation in which natural bacteria feed on the naturally occuring sugar and starch creating lactic acid. This process preserves the food, and creates beneficial enzymes, b-vitamins, Omega-3 fatty acids, and various strains of probiotics. Natural fermentation of foods has also been shown to preserve nutrients in food and break the food down to a more digestible form. This, along with the healthy dose of probiotics created during the fermentation process, is likely why the consumption of fermented foods cam result improved digestion.

Your gut does so much more than just process food – it makes up about 85 percent of your immune system ( largely due to the 100 trillion bacteria that live there). So, eating naturally fermented foods will not only help improve your digestive function, but also help keep your immune system running in tip-top shape so can fight off all those (not so) great bugs constantly being passed around.

Add naturally fermented foods such as Kombucha, raw sauerkraut, kimchi, sourdough breads or yogurt to your diet. You can buy most of these foods at your local health food store, but it’s also really easy to do at home (and easier on the wallet!). 4.  Try A New Food

csa_veg_boxIt’s easy to get stuck in a rut and stick with the same foods day in, day out. There’s not really anything wrong with knowing what you like, but if you’re not eating a large variety of foods then you are not get a large variety of nutrients and could open the door to nutritional deficiencies. Each time you visit your local grocery or farmers market pick out a new vegetable, fruit or protein to try. Or, sign up for a CSA box from a local farmer. You’ll get a variety of fruits and veggies (and sometimes even meat, honey, eggs) that are in season. You can find recipes online to learn how to cook with these new foods – you might be surprised & wonder why you left it out all this time!

5.  Take a strolli-want-to-walk

Take 15-20 minutes to walk around the block after each meal, or at least dinner. When you get moving after a meal it helps massage your internal organs, get blood flowing and greatly improves the digestive process. Not only will you feel lighter & more energized after your meal, but you’ll also be making a little step towards being more active and helping to maintain a healthy body composition. You’ll realize it’s not that hard and that 15 minute walk might turn into a half hour walk – just because it’s so refreshing!
